Three U.S. Flags from 1777 - 1819

This page is devoted to the Three Legal Flags that Flew over US Soil between 1777 and 1819. These US Flags include the original 13 Star US Flag, which flew from 1777-1795, The Star Spangled Banner of the War of 1812 (the 15 star flag), which flew from 1795-1818 and the 20 Star US Flag, which flew from 1818-1819.  The following states were added to the Union during this time period: Connecticut, Delaware, Georgia, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Caroline, Virginia (the first 13), Kentucky, Vermont, Indiana, Louisiana, Mississippi, Ohio and Tennessee.

  • Each of the former U.S. flags: 13 stars through 49 stars, is still a legal flag and may be flown at any time. No former U.S. Flag ever becomes obsolete
