New Hampshire State Flag
The design for the New Hampshire State Flag was adopted by the State legislature in 1909. The flag displays the State Seal of New Hampshire on a field of blue. The seal is surrounded by laurel leaves and nine stars. The nine stars signify that New Hampshire was the 9th state to join the union. The outer rim of the seal contains the lettering “Seal of the State of New Hampshire 1776.” In the center of the seal is the frigate Raleigh, one of the first ships authorized by the Continental Congress for the nation's navy. The ship was added to the official state seal in 1784 to recognize the thriving shipbuilding industry in the coastal town of Portsmouth. The sun rises over the Atlantic Ocean in the background.
