The historic Bear Flag was first raised in the town of Sonoma on June 14, 1846, by a group of American settlers revolting against Mexican rule. The flag was designed by William Todd, a nephew of Mary Todd Lincoln. The single red star imitated the lone star of Texas. The bear represents California grizzly bear, now extinct, and also represents strength. The bear stands on a patch of green grass. The word, "California Republic" was placed beneath the grass. The flag was adopted in 1911 as the state flag by the California State Legislature and the design and specifications were standardized in 1953.
