Illinois State Flag
 The first official flag for the state of Illinois was designed by Lucy Derwent in 1913 and featured the Seal of the State of Illinois on a white background. The Illinois State Seal emulates that of the United States, featuring the Bald Eagle, the symbol of the Country, holding the US shield has 13 stripes and 13 stars for the first thirteen colonies. There is a ribbon in the eagle’s mouth which bears the state motto: "State Sovereignty, National Union." The Eagle perches upon a rock, which contains two dates: 1818, the year Illinois joined the Union and 1868, the year the State Seal was redesigned by Sharon Tyndale. Around the base of the rock is green grass, symbolizing the verdant fields of the prairie. The blue water in the background represents Lake Michigan. In 1969 the Illinois General Assembly voted to add the word “Illinois” to the flag, making it more recognizable to people, who may not be familiar with the state’s seal.
