Arkansas State Flag

Arkansas joined the union in 1836 but did not adopt a state flag until 1913. The fact, that the state did not have a flag, was discovered by the Pine Bluff DAR Chapter when they wanted to present the state flag at the commissioning of the Battleship Arkansas in 1912. This discovery led to a DAR-sponsored flag design contest. The winning design submitted by Miss Willie K. Hocker, a member of Pine Bluff DAR, is an adaptation of the Confederate battle flag. The arrangement of the center blue stars changed several times during the ensuing decade. The red, white and blue of the flag are the same hues as the US flag. The white center diamond is bordered by a blue band with 25 white stars representing that Arkansas was the 25th state. The word Arkansas is centered in the white diamond, with three blue stars below and one above. The top star represents Arkansas’ membership in the Confederacy. The three blue stars below the name of the state represent the three countries who owned the land that is now Arkansas; Spain, France and the United States. The white diamond center represents the state’s diamond mining industry.
