Delaware State Flag

Delaware was the first state to ratify the Constitution and that date is emblazoned on their state flag, December 7, 1787. As the very first state in the United States, Delaware holds a special place in many national events, such as inaugurations. The flag is colonial blue with a buff colored diamond in the center. These colors are reminiscent of the colors of George Washington’s uniform. The wheat, corn, cow and farmer recognize the importance of agriculture and animal husbandry to Delaware’s colonial economy. The sailing ship represents the significance of both the ship-building industry and coastal commerce to early Delaware. The importance of hunting is represented by the rifleman, who also is reminiscent of early colonial soldier. A ribbon below the shield bears the words: “Liberty and Independence.”
