Arizona State Flag

The Arizona State Flag has an interesting history, originating before the state entered the Union in 1912. The design was conceived of by Arizona National Guard Colonel Charles W. Harris and Carl Hayden, who became one of Arizona’s fist representatives to Congress. It was designed to be carried by the Arizona Rifle Team to the National Rifle Matches in 1911. The thirteen radiating stripes on the top of the flag represent the 13 colonies. The copper star in the center reflects the state’s copper mining industry. The red and yellow represent the setting sun, the Spanish Conquistadors and the red of the US flag. The blue is the same hue as the Union of the US flag.
