The current Canadian Flag, popularly known as the Maple Leaf or l'Unifolié (French for "the one-leafed"), has a red base with a white square in the center, highlighting a stylized 11-point red maple leaf. This design was adopted in 1964, after a committee, picked by Prime Minister Lester B. Pearson, selected the maple leaf design by George F.G. Stanley from three choices. This flag made its first appearance on the 15th of February 1965, which is now celebrated annually as Flag Day in Canada. Prior to the selection of this flag there were a series of different designs, beginning in 1868. Each was red with Great Britain’s Union Jack in the upper left corner and different arrangements of the Coat of Arms of Canada in the center of the right side.
